CANCELLED: Rally Against Postal Service “Consolidation”
Where: Main Post Office, 550 Manor Road, Staten Island, NY
Cancelled: “We can (and we will) fight Donahoe and Issa. But we can’t fight Mother Nature.”
Community/Labor United for Postal Jobs and Services is sponsoring a rally in front of the Main Post Office at 550 Manor Road on Staten Island on Saturday February 9 from 12 noon to 2 PM.
Why Staten Island, this out of the way, difficult to reach place you may ask? The Staten Island mail processing plant is one of 81 plants to be “consolidated” beginning February 23. When complete in 2014 (although the Postmaster General has indicated the schedule may be “accelerated”) fully half of its nationwide network of processing and distribution Centers will have been eliminated.
This is part of a plan, outlined as early as the 1970’s in “white papers” issued by the likes of the Cato Institute to privatize what has been a vital public service since April 26, 1775.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, Senators Schumer and Gillibrand urged the Postmaster General to delay the closing of the plant, “with more than 80 Staten Island postal workers impacted… over economic and environmental consequences, delayed mail service to Staten Islanders, and increased transportation costs and burden placed on residents” but they have so far been ignored.
Mass transit: Catch the ferry that leaves at 11AM from the Whitehall Terminal. It’s about a 15-20 minute ride on the 61 or 62 Bus from the Staten Island terminal to the corner of Manor Road and Victory Blvd.
